When to use it

What you give it

What you get

The category ladder with evidence, where the brand stands, the chosen strategy, the word to own, a name and line verdict, and the position with what to stop saying.

How it works

  1. Name the category as buyers do
  2. Draw the ladder
  3. Find where the brand stands
  4. Pick a strategy
  5. Choose one word
  6. Check the name and the line
  7. Write the position

Example

What you give it

This example is fictional, including every brand name. We run a regional accounting software brand in Chile, Cuentafácil, sold to small shops. Buyers mostly say 'Librox' or 'Balanzo' when asked for accounting software [our interviews with 20 shop owners: 12 named Balanzo first, 5 Librox, 2 us]. Shop owners in reviews say Balanzo is 'for accountants'. Our strength: shop owners do their own books in 10 minutes a week, and 80% of our customers have no accountant. We also sell Cuentafácil Payroll and Cuentafácil POS.

What you get back (the start of it)

Mind position check: Cuentafácil in accounting software (Chile)

The category, in buyers' words

"accounting software" [check: search terms] — evidence: 20 interviews.
